Hey, I thought I should share my time with roaccutane with others who are considering taking the drug and are a bit worried about taking it….
Five months ago my acne was really bad. I got it serious on my cheeks and they were horrible looking. It made me feel like crap all the time especially when your 20 years old and all your friends skin cleared up years ago in school lol I went through so much to get rid of it…. face washes, creams and tablets from the doctors and even tried the laser treatment. Nothing worked. I then started researching and read about accutane and then the UK version roaccutane. I went to my doctor and he said I’d be a good candidate for it so I went through privately and had to pay for it but I was desperate!
So I started reading up about roaccutane and saw all these side effects that people get when on it and it made me really nervous and I was having second thoughts about it. But I can now say, the side effects effect everyone differently. The list you get with the tablets is so long lol but you only get a couple for definite.
The worst one (and to be honest isn’t that bad) is the chapped lips. Its even better getting it in winter, then you can tell people you just have a cold lol. Get a few lip balms… the one i’m using now is Palmer’s cocoa butter formula, you might wanna avoid ones that make your lips shinny. Another side effect I got a tiny bit of was dry skin on my face, and when I say tiny bit I mean like a small area around my mouth and was sorted when I added a bit of moisturiser! I was told to use Cetaphil face wash and moisturiser which you can find in Boots or somewhere. Its for gentle skin. Some other side effects I got was sore joints when they were bent for a bit, like kneeling down etc, I think my hair slightly thinned but you wouldn’t notice and sometimes I got wee blotches of dry skin on my arms. Nothing serious!…. oh and one more thing, anger was an issue for first few weeks. I got annoyed over stupid stuff really easily but it past and I was NEVER depressed, always happy!
I did 5 months on roaccutane. The first month was on 40mg and then the next four were at 80mg. For the first few days on the 80mg dose, I did feel like crap and looked sick but after 2 or 3 days I was used to it and back to normal!
It does say not to drink alcohol on them, but I did go out a few times over the 5 months but not a lot. And if I did drink a lot, the hangover is brutal, threw up all day then feel like death… so I wouldn’t advice that lol.
The worst thing for me about the whole journey was the blood tests. I’d never had my blood taken before so when the doctor told me I needed one there on the spot I fainted. And then the next time…. fainted again. Obviously I don’t like them lol but I’m actually due my final one now to see if everything is ok, so hopefully goes good when I finally go down!
My acne has now all cleared! only thing left is the red marks or scars which I will try to get rid of and usually fade on their own, but I am delighted with it!
So thats everything really. I hope when people, who are sitting on the fence, read this that it helps them in someway because I know how horrible having acne is and how it makes you feel, but if you can get on this, do it! Hopefully you’ll not regret it!
Thanks,
Adam.
Hi Adam . .

I too have just finished a 6 months course
Only have the red marks & slight scarring left also (this is our next battle trying to get shot of these !! )
Did your derm recommend anything to help reduce the red marks etc? or like mine just say in time these will fade in time ?
Really happy my skin has improved & well worth the up’s & downs, I just hope I don’t have a relapse & have to go back for a top up
Fingers crossed it’s all up from here

My derm just told me they would fade in time but I’d like to help them fade quicker lol so i’m gonna look for something to help for it!

Yep that seems to be the case but I guess we’ve been waiting for clear skin for so long another few months of healing & fading will be ok I guess ;(
If you do hear of anything or help in advice on dealing with these red marks let us know
My mum spoke to a Pharmacist at the weekend who recommend bio oil (non greasy) which is highly recommended but needs to be used daily for at least 3 months !!!!!

Hi,
Thanks Adam for taking the time to drop in and assure us that Roaccutane does work. So glad it is working out for you. My brother was on R 20 years ago and his was cystic acne. Anyway he was a success story and all these years later he still has clear skin.
Sarah – so pleased the treatment has worked out for you and still going strong. Good to hear from you.
